HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Knight tops Golden League rival Eastside

Alonte Riley rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown as host Knight held on for a 17-14 victory over previously unbeaten Eastside in the Golden League football opener for both teams.

Eastside outrushed Knight 154-129, but couldn't overcome five turnovers that repeatedly ruined favorable field position and spoiled drives.

Alex Heim scored both touchdowns for the Lions, each on 1-yard runs. The second came with 1:46 left.

The Lions (3-1) forced Knight to punt, but got the ball at midfield with 15 seconds remaining and couldn't get within field-goal range.

The only score of the first half came on Knight's first possession. After the Hawks (2-2) kept their drive alive by recovering a fumbled punt, Tony Dawson's pass to Tanner Nava gave Knight a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line.

Knight couldn't punch the ball into the end zone and had to settle for Jeffrey Morales' 21-yard field goal.

Palmdale 27, Highland 6: Demario Richard rushed for 229 yards on 25 carries to lead the Falcons (4-0) to a victory in their league opener.

Richard scored on runs of 36 and 10 yards. He also had an interception on the Bulldogs' last possession.

Palmdale's Vincent Strange caught five passes for 80 yards, including a 40-yarder from Jake Dashnaw.

For Highland (1-3), quarterback Donte Ross had 126 yards from scrimmage, including 83 on the ground. Ross connected with Jorge Bargas on a 11-yard

touchdown for the Bulldogs' lone score.

Valley Mission

Van Nuys 24, Canoga Park 14: Kyle Jean rushed 28 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns as the Wolves (4-1) rallied from a 14-point deficit to win their league opener.

Jean scored both Van Nuys touchdowns in the second half, on a 60-yard screen pass from Derrick Reynolds and on a 1-yard run.

Canoga Park (2-2) took a 14-0 first-half lead when Khyree Morgan scored on a 28-yard run and Anthony Rios caught a 8-yard pass from Alex Dion.

Dion was 11 of 19 for 153 yards and Morgan had 83 yards rushing on 14 attempts and five catches for 81 yards.

San Fernando 30, Reseda 0: The Regents saw their streak of 12 consecutive league victories end with a shutout loss to the host Tigers in the league opener for both teams.

San Fernando (4-0) built a 23-0 halftime lead behind touchdown passes from Chris Solano to Jose Camargo (70 yards) and Armando Amparo (24 yards) and a 1-yard run from Ramiro Garcia.

Camargo also registered a safety after sacking Owen Rinon in the end zone.

Daemon Thompson finished with 154 yards rushing, including a 43-yard run for the only score in the second half.

Reseda (2-3) was led by Rinon's 182 passing yards and had its chances to score. A fumble inside the Tigers' 5-yard line and an interception by Camargo at San Fernando's 10 denied the Regents' best opportunities.

The game was delayed after Reseda's Anthony Spinks had to be carted off the field because of an apparent neck injury, but it was largely for precautionary measures.

Marmonte

Royal 24, Agoura 18: Alejandro Reynoso intercepted Jack Barmasse's pass in the end zone with 36 seconds remaining to preserve the Highlanders' homecoming victory in the interdivisional game.

Royal (4-0) built a 21-6 lead following a 78-yard, 11-play drive on its first possession after intermission. River Meza, who led all rushers with 69 yards on 21 carries, capped the drive with a 2-yard run. Meza scored Royal's first touchdown on a 1-yard run to cap a 71-yard drive.

Agoura (2-3) began its comeback with a 67-yard scoring pass from Barmasse to Andrew Costin late in the third quarter. Teammate Sean Bar's 1-yard touchdown plunge with 11:08 remaining pulled the Chargers within 21-18.

Barmasse finished with 186 yards passing, completing 15 of 22 attempts with two touchdowns, and Costin had seven receptions for 103 yards.

Fernando Samoyoa's 37-yard field goal with 2:38 to play completed the scoring.

Simi Valley 46, Calabasas 17: Following a 39-14 loss Sept. 7 to Oak Park, the visiting Pioneers (3-1) won their second in a row in an interdivision matchup.

Calabasas (1-3) defeated Oak Park 51-20 on Sept. 14.

Pacific

Arcadia 18, Burroughs 8: Garrett Manoukian scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 4:48 left for the host Indians (0-4), who committed four turnovers, with the Apaches (1-3) converting two interceptions into touchdowns in both teams' league opener.

The teams combined to share the past two league titles.

Muir 36, Crescenta Valley 0: Andreece Brown had a 96-yard touchdown run and a 54-yard touchdown reception to lead the host Mustangs (1-3) to the victory in their league opener.

C.V. (2-2) was able to keep Muir from the end zone for a quarter before Brown's 54-yard reception in the second.

Muir sophomore Taeon Mason had a touchdown and scored on a 2-point conversion.

C.V. drove inside Muir's 10-yard line late in the game, but came up short.

William Wang led the Falcons with 50 yards rushing. Teammate Jack Lutynski had five receptions for 57 yards.

Pasadena 35, Glendale 0: The host Nitros were stopped on the 1-yard line as time expired in their league opener.

Christian Osorio rushed for 64 yards for Glendale (1-3).

Intersectional

Sierra Canyon 34, La Jolla Country Day 3: The visiting Trailblazers (4-0) extended their winning streak to 19, as five players scored touchdowns.

Justin Escudero, Kieran Yancy, Preston White and Andre Nunez all scored for Sierra Canyon, which trailed 3-0 after one quarter.

Hart 55, Birmingham 14: Brady White passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another score as the Indians won at College of the Canyons.

Hart (3-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Patriots (3-2) gained a first down. White threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Trent Irwin and scored on a 2-yard run to give the Indians to a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Antoine Holmes scored on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter to push Hart's lead to 21-0. At that point, Birmingham had a net total of minus-5 yards of total offense.

Isaiah Hastings got Birmingham on the board with 7:46 left in the first half with a 5-yard touchdown run. Hart answered with White's 5-yard touchdown pass to Wes Fitzpatrick, but Birmingham got a 7-yard touchdown toss from Emanuel Castro to cut the deficit to 28-14 at halftime.

Fitzpatrick, who finished with six catches for 113 yards, caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from White on Hart's first drive of the second half. After a Birmingham punt, White threw a 16-yard screen pass to Connor Wingenroth for a touchdown to make it 42-14.

Fullback Travis Rehard scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter to push the Indians' lead to 48-14. Chase White added the final touchdown on a quarterback sneak midway through the fourth quarter.

Alemany 45, Dorsey 0: Steven Mitchell caught two touchdown passes to lead the visiting Warriors to the victory.

Devon Dunn opened the scoring for the Warriors with a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter. Dunn completed 9 of 17 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and carried 10 times for 75 yards.

Mitchell caught four passes for 89 yards. Deshone Randall carried 10 times for 85 yards and scored on a 25-yard run in the second quarter.

Quentin Tartabull intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter as Alemany built a 35-0 halftime lead.

The Dons drove inside the Warriors' 5-yard line twice in the second half but were turned away.

Reginal Bell completed 9 of 21 passes for 126 yards for Dorsey (2-2).

Harvard-Westlake 56, El Camino Real 14: Chad Kanoff passed for 295 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visiting Wolverines (4-1) to the victory.

Kanoff had scoring passes of 32, 24, 57 and 33 yards and also scored on a 1-yard run.

Clinton Hooks caught six passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns, including a 32-yarder from Kanoff on the Wolverines' second play from scrimmage.

The Wolverines held the Conquistadores to 31 yards of offense in the second half.

Destin Cabatbat led ECR (1-4) with two rushing touchdowns, from 3 and 2 yards.

Taft 48, Saugus 20: Forrest Carter had nine carries for 49 yards with two touchdowns to lead the Toreadors.

Carter scored on runs of 35 and 2 yards. His 35-yarder came on Taft's first play from scrimmage.

Anton Hayward completed 11 of 19 passes for 118 yards, including a 20-scoring pass to Devon Hawkins in the second quarter to give Taft (2-3) a 19-7 lead.

Jordan Dascalo made five of six field-goal attempts for the Toreadors.

Saugus (1-4) was led by Austin Devanport, who completed 8 of 22 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. He also added a 2-yard scoring run.

Nonleague

St. Francis 38, West Ranch 30: The Golden Knights (3-1) rallied from a 30-21 deficit to prevail at Valencia High.

Jared Lebowitz passed for 308 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for a score for St. Francis, which received three field goals from Mark Verso.

Rawston Redig had eight receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (1-3).

Notre Dame 49, Golden Valley 6: Khalfani Muhammad rushed for 101 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns as the Knights (4-1) rolled to an easy victory at Canyon High.

Muhammad opened the scoring on a 67-yard run in the first quarter. He added a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

Notre Dame narrowly missed its third straight shutout.

William Harvey caught a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter for Golden Valley. The Grizzlies (0-4) had 115 yards of total offense.

Notre Dame has outscored its past three opponents 149-6.

Valencia 41, Santa Monica 13: The Vikings scored four touchdowns on four consecutive drives, highlighted by a 63-yard reception by Nick Jones.

Sean Murphy completed 23 of 35 passes for 399 yards and five touchdowns.

Malik Townsend escaped six defenders to complete a 32-yard reception to open the scoring for Valencia (2-2). Tedric Thompson caught touchdown passes of 18 and 26 yards back-to-back to extend the Vikings' lead to 28-0 late in the second quarter.

For Santa Monica (2-2), Lukas Dretzka completed 12 of 21 passes for 130 yards, including a a 19-yard touchdown pass to Sebastian LaRue, who finished with four catches 41 yards.
