Concert fundraiser set for Gadsden native battling brain cancer ...

Maudsley is known as Kebo by his friends and family.

It?s those friends and family members who are stepping in to raise money to help him in his fight against glioblastoma multiforme, a form of brain cancer.

Maudsley, a graphic artist, lives in Atlanta, but grew up in Gadsden and graduated in 1988 from Gadsden High School.

He is lifelong friends with Lane Keener, who teamed up with Albert Simpson to organize Kebostock.

For Simpson and Keener, organizing the fundraiser is just a small thing they can do.

?Wish there was more we could do, but this is one thing we can do to help make their life easier,? Simpson said.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday at Back Forty Beer Co. in Gadsden, where Simpson and musician Lefty Collins will perform.

It continues Saturday at Willie?s Woods on Friendship Road in Rainbow City from noon through 5 p.m.

Amanda Quarles, Simpson, Buck Wild and the Skydogs will perform.

Alcohol is not allowed at the event.

Maudsley was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme a little more than a year ago after he had a seizure, Simpson said.

He has health insurance, but there have been many expenses associated with his illness that are not covered, such as trips to Chicago for necessary treatments.

Maudsley?s wife, Tina, had to quit her job to take care of him, Simpson said.

Simpson has played music at many activities including the Charity Pig Roast, but the need for the charity event hit home with Maudsley?s illness. Maudsley is Simpson?s brother-in-law.

The response to the event has been tremendous, Simpson said, because so many people know and love Maudsley.

?You can?t find a better guy anywhere,? he said.

Simpson said Maudsley is one of those people about whom ?You ask, ?Why him???

Maudsley has not been given a good prognosis, but has gotten some of the best treatment available.

He has had two surgeries and now doctors say the tumor is inoperable.

Maudsley even participated in experimental treatments in an effort for doctors to find out more about his cancer, Keener said.

Maudsley found out after the treatment that he was given a placebo during his role in the experiment.

?He didn?t want it to be a placebo, but he was willing to participate, knowing that he might get a placebo, so maybe it would help someone else later on down the road,? Keener said. ?That?s just the kind of guy he is.?

Maudsley has documented much of the journey on his blog at his website, glioblasted.com.

?He?s done that, too, to try to help others,? he said.

Simpson also has information on his website, albertsimpson.com, and there is a link to donate.

Food and other items will be available during Kebostock.
