Live Chat on Compulsive Hoarding -- Tuesday, February 26 at 4 P.M. EST

Join us for a live online chat with Randy Frost of Smith College and Lee Shuer on compulsive hoarding

Scientific American recently published an article about compulsive hoarding, which is defined as the excessive accumulation of stuff and the refusal to discard it, resulting in problematic clutter. This May, the new edition of psychiatry's standard guidebook (the DSM-5) will recognize compulsive hoarding as an official disorder, separate from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Research in the last ten years has shown that hoarding and OCD are distinct, changed the way psychologists think about hoarding, refuted popular assumptions about people with excessive clutter and informed new, promising treatments. Today at 4pm EST, Randy Frost of Smith College ? a leading expert on hoarding ? and Lee Shuer, who is currently decluttering his home in Massachusetts, join us for a live web chat.

Oscars 2013: Adele Performs James Bond Theme ?Skyfall,? Wins ...

Adele Skyfall

The Sky Is Falling & We Love It

?Please welcome the unstoppable Adele,? actress Jennifer Lawrence said ? and that introduction was apt. Backed by a string section and dozens of backup singers, Adele?s debut performance of ?Skyfall? reestablished why the James Bond theme was nominated for Best Original Song.

Just two days prior at rehearsal, the British singer commented that the Dolby Theatre ?might need to get a new reverb machine.? Prior to her performance, the Academy paid tribute to 50 years of James Bond films with a scenes montage and a show-stopping set by Shirley Bassey, the woman responsible for the franchise?s founding themes. But as ?Skyfall? slowly built to a crescendo, Adele appeared completely calm and collected as she exercised remarkable control of every smoldering note.

About 30 minutes after her performance ended, the cast of Chicago announced the Best Original Song winner: ?Skyfall,? of course. Adele started to say her thanks, but as soon as she faced producer and co-writer Paul Epworth, she started to tear up. She may be unstoppable, but clearly she?s still grateful.

Watch her performance up top.

Acura comes roaring back with NSX supercar

These days, it?s common for automakers to display ?concept cars? on the auto show circuit that are thinly disguised versions of upcoming production models ? like the MDX Acura introduced at the Detroit Auto Show last month.

But the show car that drew the real crowds was a model that won?t hit the street for at least two years, the reincarnation of Acura?s once formidable NSX supercar.

The Japanese maker is desperately hoping that the re-born NSX will grab the high-line brand some much-needed attention and bring curious new shoppers into Acura showrooms even before it reaches production.

When it was launched more than a quarter-century ago, Acura transformed the way Americans thought about Japanese cars, proving that the Asians could challenge the well-established European and domestic luxury brands. But the initial success of the Honda Motor Co. subsidiary proved far too fleeting and in recent years, Acura has lagged in the back of the premium pack.

The Detroit Bureau: Despite Recent Price Spike, DoE Expects Gas to Level Off, Even Decline

?It was a brave experiment when it was first launched,? says automotive analyst George Peterson, of AutoPacific, Inc. And now, he adds, there are signs Acura ?has hit bottom and is on the upswing.?

That was clearly something the maker intended to prove when it invited automotive journalists to the race track in Sonoma, California, several weeks back, to check out the new Acura RLX and pit it against some of its most formidable competitors, including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

?This is a big deal for us,? asserted Mike Accavitti, the marque?s head of marketing. ?It?s the best product we have ever built.?

What the Honda subsidiary has pronounced its new ?flagship? is the direct heir to the original Acura Legend, a stylish and technically sophisticated product that turned conventional wisdom on its head. Produced in both coupe and sedan body styles, the original Acura model quickly ran up the sales chart and, if anything, created a conundrum for Honda officials who feared the Legend nameplate was better known than that of Acura itself.

The Detroit Bureau: Ford Looking to Novel Way to Get Back into Compact Pickup Market

Their solution proved disastrous. They not only replaced the Legend but switched to a new, European-style alphanumeric nameplate strategy for its replacement ? and for the new models to follow. The problem is that the cache of the original products was lost and motorists became completely confused by the new names; was the new flagship the RL or TL was a frequently heard question.

?Internally, they believe that (name) change cost them $1.5 billion in lost sales,? says Peterson, who has worked with Acura strategists over the years to figure out how to regain lost momentum.

Compounding the situation, Acura faced a wave of new competitors, including the even more up-market Japanese upstarts Lexus and Infiniti, launched by Toyota and Nissan respectively, which looked at Acura as a ?case study,? says the analyst.

Acura seemed to be regaining its footing in the early days of the new Millennium with an assortment of products such as the downsized RDX crossover, sales climbing to a record 209,610 in 2005 and putting it within striking distance of the first-tier luxury brands.

The Detroit Bureau: VW to Build 261 mpg 2-seater

But then, industry observers suggest, the Honda subsidiary again shot itself in the foot with a series of new mistakes, such as the introduction of an oversized chrome grille shield that has been derisively dubbed the ?beak.?

The new RLX and upcoming MDX feature a significantly smaller version of that shiny proboscis, but Acura remains committed to the alphanumeric nameplate strategy despite senior officials admitting it still confuses many customers.

But they?re hoping that a broader product line that is receiving generally positive reviews will overcome such concerns. It should also help, said Accavitti, to have new products like the Acura RLX offered at prices ?$1000s less than comparably equipped competitors.?

In keeping with its roots, meanwhile, the new models will also put an emphasis on advanced technologies, from state-of-the-art infotainment systems to the electric Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive Acura will launch in the coming year.

That technical mouthful, abbreviated as e-SH-AWD, is a hybrid drivetrain that can deliver excellent fuel economy in routine driving but transform a vehicle like the RLX into a serious performance machine when the driver stomps the throttle. The unusual layout, which uses a V-6 gas engine and three electric motors also can direct power to individual wheels to help improve handling in aggressive turns, a concept known as torque vectoring.

An even more aggressive version of the system will be the fast-beating heart of the NSX, which is expected to debut in late 2014 or early 2015, Acura officials hint.

The maker clearly needs the boost. Sales tumbled to just 105,723 in 2009, a notably sharper downturn that the overall U.S. automotive market. Last year, the maker posted a strong gain, but at 156,216 cars and crossovers it was still down nearly 25% from its all-time high.

The new year is off to a good start, January volume up about 13%, year-over-year, buoyed by other new models such as the entry-lux sedan the Acura ILX.

Acura still has some serious challenges to overcome, but the maker appears to be making inroads after what some have dubbed a lost decade. It helps to have new products at the top and bottom of the luxury range ? and a striking new NSX supercar in the offing that packs potential buyers in whenever it goes on display.

Flipping the 'off' switch on cell growth: Protein uses multiple means to help cells cope when oxygen runs low

Feb. 22, 2013 ? A protein known for turning on genes to help cells survive low-oxygen conditions also slows down the copying of new DNA strands, thus shutting down the growth of new cells, Johns Hopkins researchers report. Their discovery has wide-ranging implications, they say, given the importance of this copying -- known as DNA replication -- and new cell growth to many of the body's functions and in such diseases as cancer.

"We've long known that this protein, HIF-1?, can switch hundreds of genes on or off in response to low oxygen conditions," says Gregg Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., a molecular biologist who led the research team and has long studied the role of low-oxygen conditions in cancer, lung disease and heart disorders. "We've now learned that HIF-1? is even more versatile than we thought, as it can work directly to stop new cells from forming." A report on the discovery appears in the Feb. 12 issue of Science Signaling.

With his team, Semenza, who is the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering and Institute for Genomic Medicine, discovered HIF-1? in the 1990s and has studied it ever since, pinpointing a multitude of genes in different types of cells that have their activity ramped up or down by the activated protein. These changes in so-called "gene expression" help cells survive when oxygen-rich blood flow to an area slows or stops temporarily; they also allow tumors to build new blood vessels to feed themselves.

To learn how HIF-1?'s own activity is controlled, the team looked for proteins from human cells that would attach to HIF-1?. They found two, MCM3 and MCM7, that limited HIF-1?'s activity, and were also part of the DNA replication machinery. Those results were reported in 2011.

In the new research, Semenza and his colleagues further probed HIF-1?'s relationship to DNA replication by comparing cells in low-oxygen conditions to cells kept under normal conditions. They measured the amount of DNA replication complexes in the cells, as well as how active the complexes were. The cells kept in low-oxygen conditions, which had stopped dividing, had just as much of the DNA replication machinery as the normal dividing cells, the researchers found; the difference was that the machinery wasn't working. It turned out that in the nondividing cells, HIF-1? was binding to a protein that loads the DNA replication complex onto DNA strands, and preventing the complex from being activated.

"Our experiments answered the long-standing question of how, exactly, cells stop dividing in response to low oxygen," says Maimon Hubbi, Ph.D., a member of Semenza's team who is now working toward an M.D. degree. "It also shows us that the relationship between HIF-1? and the DNA replication complex is reciprocal -- that is, each can shut the other down."

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship Talk ...

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship TalkA new study explores close relationships between straight women and gay men and finds that the glue that cements these unique relationships is honest, unbiased relationship advice.

The study by University of Texas at Austin researchers, published online in the February issue of Evolutionary Psychology, is the first to provide empirical evidence that the emotional closeness shared by straight women and gay men is rooted in the absence of deceptive mating motivations.

?Friendships between straight women and gay men are free of hidden mating agendas,? said Eric Russell, lead author of the study. ?They may be able to develop a deeper level of honesty because their relationship isn?t complicated by sexual attraction or mating competition.?

As part of the study, Russell and colleagues presented 88 heterosexual women, and 58 homosexual men with the Facebook profile of a person named Jordan.

The profiles were identical, except for Jordan?s gender and sexual orientation. During the time of the study, the respondents believed the researchers were examining how online profiles influence friendships.

Participants were told to imagine they were at a party with Jordan, and he/she gave them romance-related advice. They then assessed the degree to which they would trust this advice.

According to the results, straight women perceived advice offered by a gay man to be more trustworthy than advice offered by a heterosexual man or woman. Similarly, the gay male participants perceived a straight woman?s love advice to be more trustworthy than the same advice offered by a homosexual man or woman.

Investigators theorize that women may have conflicts of interests with other women and straight men.

For example, other women may be seen as potential competitors, and straight men may discourage relationships with other men and steer women toward themselves.

Gay men, however, don?t have these conflicts with straight women, so they may be uniquely positioned to provide mating-relevant advice and support that is not tainted with ulterior motives from sexual rivalry or sexual attraction.

Tech Stocks: Techs sink with Apple, Facebook; Google up

By Benjamin Pimentel, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Technology stocks took another hit Thursday morning following a harsh selloff in the previous session, as large-cap players like Facebook, Oracle and Intel came under selling pressure.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, left, and hedge-fund manager David Einhorn.

Apple /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL -0.93% ?was also down, slipping about 0.4% to $447.05 ahead of a planned conference call by hedge-fund giant David Einhorn, who is pressing the company to consider issuing a special preferred stock grant. Einhorn plans to host a conference call at 2 p.m. ET.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Einhorn said his proposal offers a ?win-win? for both Apple and its shareholders. ?We have a solution that allows shareholders to see that value and Apple to keep that cash,? he added. See: Einhorn on 'win-win' proposal to Apple

Apple?s retreat set the tone for a downbeat trading session, which saw the Nasdaq Composite Index /quotes/zigman/12633936 COMP -1.16% ?give up 0.6% to stand at 3,147. The Morgan Stanley High-Tech Index /quotes/zigman/6015481 MSH -1.40% ?and Philadelphia Semiconductor Index /quotes/zigman/1468249 SOX -1.97% ?both fell more than 1% in early trades.

The tech sector retreat followed Wednesday?s broader market selloff sparked by investor concern over the Federal Open Market Committee?s January meeting minutes that revealed differences over monetary policy. See: Market Snapshot.

Among large-cap tech names, Oracle /quotes/zigman/76584/quotes/nls/orcl ORCL -1.80% ?, SAP /quotes/zigman/126928/quotes/nls/sap SAP -1.92% ?, Intel /quotes/zigman/20392/quotes/nls/intc INTC -2.29% ?, Cisco /quotes/zigman/20039/quotes/nls/csco CSCO -1.30% ?and Microsoft /quotes/zigman/20493/quotes/nls/msft MSFT -1.36% ?were all trading down more than 1%. Facebook /quotes/zigman/9962609/quotes/nls/fb FB -3.56% ?was off more than 3% to $27.58.

Also in the red were shares of Hewlett-Packard /quotes/zigman/229301/quotes/nls/hpq HPQ +0.24% ?which were down a fraction at $16.64 ahead of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company?s fiscal first-quarter report. See: H-P seen posting earnings drop.

Sony shows features of PS4

Sony is reinventing the PlayStation video game console, demonstrating faster, graphics-rich hardware with new Internet-based features; Ford adds 450 new jobs to its Cleveland plant; Congress proposes a high-tech ID in immigration talks.

Shares of VeriFone /quotes/zigman/365296/quotes/nls/pay PAY -39.75% ?were also in full retreat mode, plummeting 38% to $19.80 after the company drastically cut its estimates for its fiscal first quarter.

On the upside, shares of Google Inc. /quotes/zigman/93888/quotes/nls/goog GOOG +0.24% ?were up more than 0.8% at $801.59. The Internet powerhouse?s stock hit an all-high recently, rising above $800 for the first time in its history.

And the stock will probably go higher, Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner argues in a note raising the price target to $1,000. ?We believe mass adoption of smart phones, tablets and the mobile Web is a large value creation opportunity for Google,? Kirjner wrote.

Groupon /quotes/zigman/7212269/quotes/nls/grpn GRPN +4.29% ?also traded up 6% on a Piper Jaffray upgrade. Shares of Home Away /quotes/zigman/5675710/quotes/nls/away AWAY +9.82% ?also rallied more than 13% after the online home vacation and rental marketplace company posted upbeat results.
