Former Edmonton Eskimo and University of Alberta Golden Bears receiver Brian Fryer is headed to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

The news was announced this afternoon on TSN by another former Eskimo, in 2012 Hall of Fame inductee Damon Allen.

Fryer goes in after a CIS career that saw him named a three-time Canada West all-star in four years at the U of A. He left the school second all-time in Canada West history in receiving yards in a season (1,068), receptions in a season (58), had the most receiving touchdowns in a season (14), the most receiving career receiving yards (2,655) and most career receptions (136).

While playing for the Bears, Fryer had a string of impressive accomplishments:

  • - Five all-purpose touchdowns in a single game in 1973.
  • - First Canadian university player to have over 1,000 receiving yards.
  • - Set the single-game receiving yards record (227).
  • - First winner of the Bill Woywitka Trophy (team MVP).

Fryer went from the U of A to the Washington Redskins, who took him 234th overall in the 1976 NFL draft. He joined the Eskimos in 1978, just in time to be a part of Edmonton?s five-in-a-row championship run in the CFL. He?s gone on to be the executive director of Football Alberta. Fryer was an Alberta High School Sports Hall of Fame inductee in 2008.

The other five inductees to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame are former Toronto Argonaut and Calgary Stampeder Dan Ferrone (player); former Hamilton Tiger-Cats Miles Gorrell (player) and Earl Winfield (players); longtime referee John Ireland (builder) and former St. Francis Xavier coach, Atlantic Bowl and the Canadian College Bowl/Vanier Cup ?founder Don Loney (builder).

For full details, check the CFL?s press release.

The Eskimos will host the hall of fame induction weekend this year, which is also the 50th edition of the event. The date will be set for the induction shortly after the release of the 2013 CFL schedule, with CFL alumni and fans encouraged to attend. Eskimos season seat holders have first crack at the best seats for the Hall of Fame weekend events.
